Dream With Me Monday: Hawaii

Dream With Me Monday · July 19, 2026 · Julie Day, Founder, Gatherwell Travel

"If someone tells me they have five grand and they want to go to Hawaii, I tell them, 'You're going to love Mexico.'" A travel podcast host said that recently, and the data backs her up. Here is what I tell my clients instead: the strategy has to change, not the destination.

Golden hour on Poipu Beach, Kauai
The Na Pali Coast at golden hour — Kauai's south shore is the quieter, sunnier side of the island.

Hawaii's average hotel room went from $283 a night in 2019 to $367 in 2025 ($449 in December). Resort fees run $40 to $75 a night. And since January 2026, the nation's first climate impact fee pushed effective lodging taxes to roughly 18 to 19 percent.

This week I priced a real example for January 24 to 31, 2027. The premise: ten friends, one private villa on Kauai's south shore, one week in high season. Here is how the numbers actually work.

✦ So what happened to Hawaii prices?

The hotel market is expensive. But the villa market is not. When you shift from booking rooms to booking a whole property and splitting it among a group, the per-person math changes entirely. Here are the three numbers that stopped me when I ran this trip:

$1,020 USD
Villa per person
for 7 nights
$146 USD
Per person per night
10-person villa
Under $2,000 CAD
All-in per person
from Vancouver

Let me show you exactly how I got there.

✦ Dream No. 1: The Poipu Villa

Private villa with pool on Kauai's south shore
A private plantation-style villa with pool — the kind of property that makes a group trip feel like a private retreat.

Poipu is the sunniest corner of Kauai. While the north shore gets the dramatic cliffs and the occasional rain shower, the south shore gets the reliable sun, the calm snorkeling beaches, and the kind of January weather that makes people back home genuinely envious. It is also where the best private villa inventory sits.

The villa I priced for this dream: a five-bedroom, five-bath plantation-style home with a private pool, fire pit, outdoor living room, and a koa-wood dining table that seats ten. Walking distance to the beach. The kind of place where everyone has their own room and their own bathroom, but the whole group gathers for coffee on the lanai every morning. It runs about $10,200 USD for the week, every tax and fee included. Split among ten travelers, that is $1,020 USD per person, or $146 per person per night, in high season.

A koa-wood table set for ten — the heart of a villa week in Hawaii.

The math on the villa, for a group of ten sharing equally:

Villa (5BR, Poipu) — USD Per person / 7 nights
Villa rental, taxes & fees (10 guests) $1,020 USD
Groceries & household (est.) $120 USD
Activities & car rental (est.) $200 USD
Villa subtotal (excl. flights) ~$1,340 USD

Flights to Lihue (LIH), January 24–31, 2027 — roundtrip per person, economy, taxes included:

Canadian Departures (CAD) Roundtrip per person
Vancouver (YVR) $1,020
Calgary (YYC) $1,090
Edmonton (YEG) $1,115
Toronto (YYZ) $1,230
US Departures (USD) Roundtrip per person
Los Angeles (LAX) $520
Seattle (SEA) $590
Phoenix (PHX) $610
New York (JFK) $790

All-in per person (villa + flights): $1,428 to $1,544 USD from major US gateways; $1,969 to $2,643 CAD from Canadian ones. Vancouver comes in under $2,000 CAD, everything included. That is a week in Hawaii, in high season, with your nine favourite people, in a private villa with a pool.

“The villa is the trip. The island is the backdrop.”

✦ Dream No. 2: The Ritz-Carlton Maui Alternative

Couple relaxing by a fire pit at a Hawaii resort at dusk
The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua experience: a fire pit at dusk, ocean air, and January whale season just offshore.

For comparison, I also priced the couples version at a five-star Maui resort for the same week: the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. January is its finest month. The humpback whales arrive from Alaska and breach just offshore, the rates drop from their summer peak, and the resort's ocean-view rooms are genuinely spectacular.

Even with a 25 percent promotion applied, the Ritz path runs roughly $3,773 to $3,876 USD per person with flights. Same islands. Same dates. The villa group pays roughly a third of what the resort couple pays.

Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Maui (CAD) Per person / 7 nights
Garden View Room (double occ.) $2,100 CAD
Ocean View Room (double occ.) $2,730 CAD
Ocean Front Room (double occ.) $3,220 CAD
+ Flights from Vancouver (YVR → OGG) $1,050 CAD
Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Maui (USD) Per person / 7 nights
Garden View Room (double occ.) $1,540 USD
Ocean View Room (double occ.) $2,000 USD
Ocean Front Room (double occ.) $2,360 USD
+ Flights from Los Angeles (LAX → OGG) $480 USD

The Ritz path is the right one for couples or smaller groups who want the full-service resort experience: the spa, the beach attendants, the whale-watching from a sun lounger. The villa path is the right one for groups of eight to twelve who want to feel like they live there for a week.

✦ The Aloha Factor

The Local Motion surf shop in Honolulu — the spirit of aloha is not a marketing slogan.

I want to say something about Hawaii that the pricing tables cannot capture. The aloha spirit is real. It is not a tourism slogan. It is the way a stranger at the farmers' market will spend twenty minutes telling you which mangoes are best and why. It is the way the ocean feels like a welcome rather than a backdrop. It is the way January in Kauai makes you wonder why you ever thought you needed to go anywhere else.

Hawaii is the only place I have ever been where the landscape itself seems to be in a good mood.

✦ The Takeaway

Rainbow over the Garden Island of Kauai
A double rainbow over Kauai's taro fields — the Garden Island earns its name.

The lesson translates well beyond travel: when unit costs rise, the winners are the ones who rethink the unit. Hawaii is not too expensive. The hotel model is too expensive. The villa model is not.

January is, genuinely, the best time to go: warm, dry on the south shore, and free of the summer crowds that make the road to Hana feel like a parking lot. And if a January escape is on your radar, this is the booking window.

If this trip is calling to you, I would love to help you build it. Whether you want the villa week with ten friends or a quieter Ritz-Carlton escape with your partner, I can price it out, hold the dates, and handle every detail from the airport transfer to the snorkel rental.
